Tweets of the Week: 7/10/2012

Well it's been another wild week in the Twitterverse, with the explosion of NBA Free Agency and the wild contracts NBA GM's are tossing out (that was ultimately supposed to be stopped after the lockout), a Wimbledon final for the ages, which lead to Rovell v. Deitsch, the Twitter battle for the ages, and of course, the Fourth of July. Time to jump right in.

Let's just come right out and say it, NBA Free Agency has gotten absolutely absurd already. Deron Williams took to Twitter to announce he was staying with the Nets, tweeting a picture of the Brooklyn Nets logo. Shortly thereafter, this lead to ESPN "analyst" (I use quotation marks because it's questionable what he even analyzes) Chris Broussard tweeting that a "source" had told him Deron Williams was staying with the Nets. To make a long story short, Broussard continued to embarass himself throughout the night, and never appeared to acknowledge the fact that it was Deron Williams himself that announced he was staying with the Nets, not some faceless and anonymous source.

Continuing the carousel of NBA Free Agency, Jason Kidd was offered and accepted an astoundingly shocking three-year, $9 million contract with the New York Knicks. I mean, i know the Knicks need a point guard, but if they were going to sign a geriatric, there are plenty of washed up point guards that would've cost them far less. Oh, and apparently the Knicks are willing to match any and all offers for Jeremy Lin...and when I say any offer, they apparently mean any offer. Other notable free agent moves include Ray Allen leaving Boston for the Heat, and Steve Nash heading to the Lakers. You'll see some of my favorite tweets from the free agent moves so far below.

Wimbledon has come to a close, and boy did it ever end on the highest of highs. The UK finally had a chance for one of their own to win the men's title, and although Andy Murray put up a valiant effort, ultimately, Roger Federer proved to be too much, as he reclaimed his throne as the best tennis player in the world (and in my opinion, the greatest tennis player of all time). But one of the funnier highlights of Wimbledon was watching Richard Deitsch repeatedly bait Darren Rovell into a Twitter spat over whether tennis is truly a dying sport, as Rovell constantly claims.

Other quick hits from the week that was on Twitter:

  • The ACC signed a 12 year deal with the Orange Bowl. That sound you hear is John Swofford diving through coins in his Scrooge McDuck sized vault in Greensboro.

  • Vikings RB Adrian Peterson was arrested in Texas over the weekend, and there apparently is some question as to whether he should've been arrested at all. See below for Peterson's thoughts on the matter, as he took to Twitter in the days following his arrest.

  • I'm not quite sure, but I think the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees are still finishing up their game from Sunday night.

  • In this week's Jose Canseco update, apparently he wants us all to know that he "completes us." He couldn't be more right. Thank you Jose!

Finally, it would be unpatriotic of me to not include my favorite tweets from the Fourth of July. Nothing screams #MERICA more than hilarious GIF files and snarky tweets, amirite??
